STYLE COACHING INSTITUTE®
PERSONAL STYLING BLOG

** Calling all aspiring Personal Stylists, Image Consultants, Fashion Stylists and Personal Shoppers! **

Over the next few weeks, we’re going be talking about how to develop your ‘sense of style’. In this video, Lesson One deals with ‘defining your personal style as it is right now’. So, if you’re up for a challenge, then grab yourself a quiet half hour, and come join us for these simple Style Steps!

The first thing we’re going to do is take a close look at your current wardrobe. Place some of your personal favourite clothes on your bed. You might find that each of them has something in common or a general theme… Whether it’s that they are elegant, sophisticated, clean-cut styles, or perhaps they’re feminine and figure hugging, or maybe even androgynous… Whatever the theme might be, it’s obviously one that speaks to you on some level.

Becoming aware of what you naturally gravitate towards, helps you to define your own sense of style.

If you have time, try on each item, and ask yourself the following questions…

How does the piece feel when I wear it?

Where does it fit most closely to my body?

Does it hug certain curves or drape over any aspects of my figure?

Does it flare at the hips, or under the bust, or do the lines hang quite straight?

Does the fabric lie flat, or are there any features like flounces, ruffles, ribbons, sequins, pleats, ruching, appliqué or other embellishments?

Is it one of our neutral colours like grey, navy, camel, black or white?

Is it a warm and muted autumn tone like bordeaux wine, shaded spruce, chocolate or mocha brown?

Is it a clear and bold winter colour like sapphire, vibrant purple, or cherry red?

Is it perhaps a distinctive spring colour like coral, apple green, or cornflower blue?

Or maybe it’s from the dusky summer palette, with colours like mulberry, aubergine or smoked violet!

Is it a solid colour, or does it have blocks of colour like we saw in many designs from the 60s?

Does it feature a pattern of any type?

Are there vertical stripes, horizontal, diagonal, slim lines or wide?

Is there a symmetrical or asymmetrical pattern?

Maybe it has a floral motif or a dramatic animal print?

The next thing we’re going to consider, is what your clothes say about you, and defining how you want other people to perceive you. Having a sense of style, also means knowing what’s appropriate for different occasions. Think about the different roles in your life & jot down the different situations you typically repeat each week. Think about how you want to appear, and most importantly, how you want to feel for each of these situations.

And finally for this week, it’s important to also ask yourself what you would like to change about your current wardrobe so you can set some style-related goals…

Would you love to be more adventurous with your choice of colours?

Would you like to have more variety in the types of clothes you choose?

Would you like your clothes to fit you better, or be more flattering?

Would you like to experiment with layering and accessorising?

Would you like to have a greater choice of shoes and boots?

Would you like to start investing in better quality items?

Would you like to declutter your wardrobe and weed out any items you no longer wear? It’s exciting when you start to visualise what you’d like to achieve!

In our next video, we’ll look at how to find inspiration that will help you to develop your sense of style and become more confident in expressing yourself through your clothing choices.

One of the key aims of a Style Coach™, Image Consultant or Personal Stylist is to help people become more confident and self-assured when styling themselves; whether this is shopping for new items to add to their existing wardrobe, bringing outfits together for a particular occasion, mixing and matching accessories, or experimenting with new colours.

When you become a certified Style Coach™, you’ll learn to help clients use their outer appearance as a form of self-expression - a way to illustrate who they really are on the inside and share this with the people around them. Our choice of clothing and accessories speaks volumes about us, and our appearance makes a first (and long-lasting) impression!

Many people look to the media to find out what they should wear this season, and often they try to replicate someone else’s look. While it is fun to find inspiration from various different sources, it is also important to understand that for our clothing choices to work best, they need to be in harmony with our own ‘Style Personality’, not someone else’s!

Once you gain an awareness of the attributes of your Style Personality, you will find that ‘effortless style’ really does start to come more naturally! You will be able to mix and match with ease, and getting dressed will become an enjoyable and creative experience, everyday! Good knowledge of your Style Personality will pave the way for you to project the image you want, and to feel comfortable in your own skin, whatever the occasion!

The 5 Style Personalities…

Although most people fall into one of five general ‘Style Personalities’, that’s not to say that they can’t play with other styles or that their Style Personality is unable to change.

You might find that you are able to identify which Style Personality you at this point in time, but you may also recognise that you have been a different ‘Style Personality’ at another stage in your life.

You may even recognise that you flow between two or more Style Personalities, depending on your mood, and perhaps between work and leisure.

The 5 main ‘Style Personality’ groups are…

Romantic
Classic
Creative
Dramatic
Natural

When making wardrobe choices, it can help to have a picture in your mind of a person whose style you admire, or who epitomises the general style you would like to achieve.

To clarify, this doesn’t mean to say that you would wish to replicate anyone else’s look exactly (because this doesn’t embrace your own individuality)! Instead, look to stylish role models as a source of inspiration, but then aim to bring your outfits together with your own unique twists, touches and personal preferences!

- You love to party and to be the ‘star of the show’
- Your wardrobe is full of impulse buys
- You often sacrifice practicality to look good
- You’d always rather be over-dressed than under-dressed
- You love Hollywood glamour and Marilyn Monroe
- Makeup is drama: striking red lips, luscious lashes and smouldering eyes
- You like to express your sexuality in your clothes
- You prefer bold, striking accessories
- Your hairstyle can be bold, and always well styled
- You have good levels of body confidence
- You love fashion magazines and beauty products
- You like bold colours and animal prints
- You enjoy reinventing yourself and trying new looks
- You love to have fun with your hairstyle, and have numerous styling products and tools

9 Steps to Finding your Personal Style

“Signature style” is one of those fashion phrases that gets thrown around a lot, but what does it actually mean? The idea of discovering your own personal style is often too heavily weighted on celebrity style icons. While clicking through hundreds of pictures of the Olsen twins, Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo has its own merits, cultivating a look that will work for years instead of wanting to dress exactly like somebody else will always be the happier option. Whether you’re looking for a total style overhaul or to try something a little new this year, there are some simple steps that can make you like what you see when you open your wardrobe each morning. First, you need to understand your body shape and how to dress for it; then you can start to identify what makes you feel confident.

Fashion Revolution Week: Six Ways To Shop Mindfully

WHO made the clothes you’re wearing right now? It’s a simple enough question. But four years on from the Rana Plaza disaster, it’s more important than ever that we keep asking it. This week marks the anniversary of the collapse of the Bangladesh factory complex that killed 1,138 garment workers and injured a further 2,500 in one of the worst industrial tragedies in history.

Fashion’s supply chains are incredibly complicated beasts that require hours of unravelling – from farm to factory to store, from zips to buttons to beading, it’s never clear under what conditions they came into being. Often brands don’t own factories outright – so garment production is subcontracted out, making it difficult to hold people to account. But it’s easy to start asking questions.

In the spirit of transparency, this week also marks #FashionRevolutionWeek, an ethical initiative whose current focus is #whomademyclothes, a campaign which encourages consumers to demand greater transparency in the fashion supply chain. Here are six ways to get involved with Fashion Revolution Week, and shop mindfully in the process… http://buff.ly/2q5IQTR
