9 Steps to Finding your Personal Style

“Signature style” is one of those fashion phrases that gets thrown around a lot, but what does it actually mean? The idea of discovering your own personal style is often too heavily weighted on celebrity style icons. While clicking through hundreds of pictures of the Olsen twins, Alexa Chung and Olivia Palermo has its own merits, cultivating a look that will work for years instead of wanting to dress exactly like somebody else will always be the happier option. Whether you’re looking for a total style overhaul or to try something a little new this year, there are some simple steps that can make you like what you see when you open your wardrobe each morning. First, you need to understand your body shape and how to dress for it; then you can start to identify what makes you feel confident.

Yours in style,

Kate x

Hi there!

This is Kate here from the Style Coaching™ HQ where we understand the many key factors that go into creating a successful career as an image consultant, personal stylist, personal shopper or Style Coach™. Studying a credible training programme is critical, but there are also personal attributes that we help our ambitious students to develop and nurture within themselves.

Today I would like to run through with you the top 5 inspiring habits of all successful Style Coaches™.

– So, Habit Number One

They ask quality questions! What is my ambition? What am I here to achieve? What is it that I want to contribute as a Style Coach? Who is it that I really want to connect with? What are my dreams? What are my hopes? What kind of feelings do I want to generate every day? And if I have a vision for my career, what specifically does this vision look like?

– In at Number Two

They allow themselves to fall in love with their career! We all know what it feels like to be in love – it’s not hard work to give your time and attention to something that makes you feel alive! If you keep doing more of what makes you joyful, then you are going to radiate the most magnetic energy and guess what happens? People get drawn towards working with you!

– The Third Inspiring Habit  is…

Great Style Coaches choose to have a little faith in themselves! Fear and doubt will be there, but they don’t let it stop them from moving purposefully in the direction that they have decided is right for them. They trust that they can overcome challenges, that they can figure this out, that they CAN and they WILL claim what they aspire to BE, DO and HAVE in life.

– In at Number Four….

They are stubborn and persistent in the pursuit of their goals. But, vitally, they are also FLEXIBLE in their approach! They keep perspective and don’t lose focus when times get tough. They never give up hope or stop trying, but they’re also prepared to be honest about the best route to their destination. They will change their approach as many times as it takes in order to get to where they want to be.

– And Last but not Least,

All great Style Coaches surround themselves with positive people. Instead of listening to those who drag them down with their own fears and limitations, they find an inspiring and passionate peer group. Mentors, who will help a Style Coach to raise their game, up-level their expectations, and expand themselves to truly be the best they can be!

What to wear to an Xmas party

Think for a moment about the outfit you are going to wear for your next celebratory or festive event. I wonder how many of us instantly think of wearing our trusted LBD (little black dress) with some nice accessories? Of course, there’s nothing wrong with that. However, in this article, I would like to discuss and highlight the less conservative option of ‘non-black’ clothes. As a professional image consultant and Style Coach™, I think of it as an invitation to make the leap from dressing with ‘predictability and safety’ at your next event, to dressing with ‘style and sparkle’!

First of all, and strictly speaking, *black* is not a ‘colour’. Instead, it absorbs all other colours! So, why is *black* such a popular choice? Why do we like it so much? I love considering these questions when I am doing professional colour analysis with my clients, and if you’ve ever considered becoming a colour consultant yourself, then you will share my enthusiasm!

The most obvious answer is because it’s a comfortable and safe choice. It transmits a feeling of protection and strength. Many would also argue that it is mysterious. Colour psychology is just fascinating. We all use *black* at various times of our lives: when experiencing mourning, when we want to ‘blend in’ due to low self-esteem or body-image issues, when we want to appear slimmer due to discontent about our body shape or weight, or when we want to feel secure in our wardrobe choices so we don’t ‘get it wrong’. Fashion tells us that black is slimming, seductive, formal, elegant and sophisticated. There are a lot of studies about the psychology of ‘black’, but the main question here is to ask ourselves, “Instead of black, why not bring our outfits to life with vibrant use of colour?” In Style Coaching™, we combine life coaching skills, which helps me to explore how my client ‘feels’ when wearing different colours, and trying different styles - not just how my client ‘looks.

Fashion historians and fashion courses trace the iconic origins of the little black dress to the 1920s designs of Coco Chanel and Jean Patou. They were intended to be long-lasting, versatile, affordable, accessible to the widest market possible and in a neutral colour. The little black dress is considered essential to a complete wardrobe by many women and fashion observers. But do we believe we’re radiant wearing black? Is it really flattering us and enhancing our image as much as we would like it to?

Wearing black is certainly functional and turns complex choices into easy ones when you don’t know what to wear to a festive event. When wearing black, you always have the assurance and self-confidence that you will be dressed appropriately. But is black properly translating the state or mood we are in when we attend parties? And, if you are a self-confessed lover of ‘black’, would your opinion change if a colour consultant gave you alternative colour suggestions? This is where, in my opinion, the journey of discovering your style really starts.

During the Style Coach™ training we learned about colour psychology in addition to the colour analysis. Understanding our ‘true’ or ‘wow’ colours can be powerful, as they affect us positively and in profound ways. The colours we wear can be used to create harmony with our own natural colouring, and they essentially become another part of us. One of my friends (and fellow Style Coaches™) recently shared with me that she had clients idealizing black, but it was actually not suiting their skin tone and was stealing their shine. Perhaps this is more common than we realise.

When we choose black during personal shopping trips, are we in fact denying ourselves the opportunity to look for an outfit which will make us look and feel outstanding? Are we missing out on a chance to try something that is outside our comfort zones and a touch different to what we’re used to? Style Coaching™ combines elements of personal branding, so we’re constantly looking for ways to showcase our unique personality and every other factor that becomes a person’s ‘personal brand’.

Imagine yourself walking into the department stores at the start of the festive season, with your personal shopper, when the mannequins are wearing party outfits… What outfits on the mannequins really inspire you? When something catches your eye, what shine is it transmitting to have grabbed your attention?
The aim is to search for something to wear which will not only enhance our silhouette, but which also communicates our own energy, personality and vibrancy. So many of our attributes can be communicated, enhanced and highlighted with our colour choices. Personal styling is about having fun with fashion and creatively expressing yourself, but don’t worry about looking overdressed; instead focus on choosing the right fabric, the right shape, the right length and the right colour. For many of my personal styling clients, wearing a vibrant colour choice can feel like a big transition, in which case, a black outfit can be transformed with even a touch of colour that suits you.
I hope you enjoy choosing your next outfit and that you’re feeling inspired to find a Xmas party dress that will help you feel great during your celebratory occasions!

What jobs can I get as a Personal Stylist?

So you’re thinking about enrolling for one of the Style Coaching Institute® diploma courses in professional Style Coaching™, and you’re wondering, “What jobs can I get as a stylist?” There are several prefixes that accompany “stylist”, enough to make your head spin! Personal Styling is an industry that lends itself easily to exploration and specialization. We have compiled a quick and easy guide to how you can use your Diploma in Style Coaching™.

Style Coach™

This is the coveted title that most of our graduates choose to use after completing our exclusive ‘Style Coaching™ Diploma Course’. As Style Coaches™, they are able to offer everything Personal Stylists, Image Consultants, Personal Shoppers and Wardrobe Stylists offer, but they can also coach their client to achieve greater levels of inner confidence too. Alongside their expertise in personal styling, a Certified Style Coach™ is an expert advocate of positive body-image and self-esteem. Style Coaches™ use methods and tools from life coaching and personal branding to make personal styling so much more transformative (inside and out). They assist their clients in making styling suggestions that will also boost their clients’ overall confidence. It is important that each client feels comfortable and that their specific needs are addressed. They offer a holistic styling process that embraces the whole person, and helps them to “love the skin they’re in”. Style Coaches™ can work one-to-one with clients and be their own bosses, they can host group workshops and style events, they can work with companies and top executives, they can apply for positions as resident ‘Style Coaches™’ for local and national magazines and radio stations, and so much more!

Personal Stylist or Image Consultant

This may be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of jobs in styling. A graduate of the Style Coaching™ diploma course can also choose to work as a Personal Stylist or Image Consultant. This means that they work one-on-one with their clients, either independently or as a fashion retailer employee. They help each client to understand what clothing suits their particular lifestyle, body shape and colour characteristics. When you choose to become a Personal Stylist your services can range anywhere from color consultations to make-up application and recommendations. If you enjoy working closely with individuals and focusing only on a person’s wardrobe and appearance, then becoming an image consultant or personal stylist should be right up your alley.

Fashion Stylist

Many Certified Style Coaches™ go on to practice as “Fashion Stylists”. Behind every immaculately styled editorial feature there is a Fashion Stylist working tirelessly to put it all together. As a Fashion Stylist you will select clothing for published editorial features, advertising campaigns in both print and television, music videos, concert performances, in addition to styling for public appearances made by celebrities and public figures. Be prepared to work long hours on set. You will be expected to think on your feet and there will be times when you’ll have very little time to pull things together. However, your job as a Fashion Stylist will never be boring. You will have chance to experiment and even break a few rules while you work to create a unique aesthetic. If you are highly creative, this ever-changing landscape will be perfect for you.

Wardrobe Stylist

Think about your favourite television show. Now think of how stylish your favourite TV personality always seems to be. The job of the Wardrobe Stylist is to create looks for the cast members of television shows and movies, or celebrities that need someone to manage their everyday wardrobe choices. The wardrobe stylist is tasked with the job of telling a story of who the person is through the clothing they wear. This is similar to being a Personal Stylist or Style Coach™ in the sense that both need a deep understanding of the personality they are working with and what needs to be communicated. However, Wardrobe Stylists are purely focused on creating capsules of outfits. They can have a lot of fun as they are often expected to put together 100s of looks for several different characters and they get to meet many celebrities through their work.

Personal Shopper

Another popular path you can choose as a certified Style Coach™ is an extension of personal styling, called personal shopping. In this fast-paced world many men and women don’t have much time on their hands. And though they see the value in dressing the part, they require some assistance. This is where your job as a Personal Shopper comes in. Once you have defined the needs of your client the next step will be to purchase items that you believe are suitable for their new wardrobe. You can work in two capacities, the first being shopping for specific occasions, and the second is to be your client’s personal shopper on an on-going basis, building your client’s wardrobe over time. Some clients like to shop with you and just gain your advice, whereas others prefer you to completely take the reins and just present them with the outfits you have chosen. Becoming a Personal Shopper offers you a lot of flexibility; you can work with one-to-one clients in your own independent practice, or you can apply for job positions as a permanent Personal Shopper with high-street retailers.

Wardrobe Management

Managing your client’s wardrobe can be a challenging but rewarding experience. A certified Style Coach™ can specialise in wardrobe management, or they can include it as part of an overall service that includes personal styling, personal shopping and much more. As a dedicated Wardrobe Manager you will simply help your client to edit his/her wardrobe by getting rid of pieces that no longer fit, are outdated or just worn out. You will also help your client with understanding how to wear items they already own in fresh new ways. As a Wardrobe Manager you can also go as far as cataloguing all the items your client has in their wardrobes, analysing their lifestyle and making shopping plans for key pieces they need to gradually purchase.

Work in Retail

Not all stylists work with their own clients or on big budget movie sets. There is also a need for qualified stylists in retail outlets on the shop floor. This particular position will require you to have a good knowledge of what the store has in stock so that you will be able to efficiently assist customers. Shopping is a very stressful experience for many men and women and your expertise will play an integral role in making it a rewarding experience. Whether it is helping a middle-aged woman find a dress that is both age appropriate and stylish, or helping a gentleman choose the right tie to with his favourite shirt, or the right pocket square to go with his suit.

So, if you were a certified Style Coach™, which one of these specialisations would most appeal to you? How would you use your diploma qualification from the Style Coaching Institute®?

This week’s actionable is to think about the jobs listed above and decide which one is right for you. Leave your comments on our Facebook page or email us on info@stylecoachinginstitute.com to discuss your goals! You can even schedule a complimentary consultation call to help you decide whether Style Coaching™ is the right course for you!

An important message for anyone thinking about becoming a Personal Stylist, Image Consultant or Personal Shopper

When you sign-up for an image consultant training course or personal stylist course you’ll learn how to make people look physically beautiful - you’ll learn the rules of “what not to wear” and “what to wear”, how to use hair and makeup to enhance people’s appearance, and how to use the science of color analysis to accentuate people’s eye colour, hair and skin tone.

But, as this video from life coach Brendon Burchard so perfectly captures, “real beauty” can’t be defined simply by what you wear or whether your hair and makeup are correct for this season’s latest trends.

“Image consultants” and “personal stylists” are supposed to be the experts in looking beautiful, but really they are only experts in one dimension of “beauty” - that is what you see in the mirror. This is where Style Coaching™ comes in!

At the Style Coaching Institute® we share Brendon Burchard’s passion for authentic beauty: beauty that comes from inside each person and flows out of them in the way they embrace life, they way they connect with people, they way they are true to themselves, and the way that they are uniquely individual.

When you become a certified Style Coach™ you become an expert in every dimension of “beauty” (not just what you see on the surface, but what’s going on beneath the surface too). We believe in the power in appearance (which is why we teach you all the skills and knowledge of image consultancy and personal styling), but we take this much deeper by combining the power of appearance with life coach training, and self-image psychology. Our focus isn’t just on how you look, it’s on how you feel. It’s not just about having a positive appearance, it’s about having a positive body image.

The truth is that beauty is multi-faceted and as unique as you are. So, if you want to become a true beauty expert, then Style Coaching™ might be the perfect fit for you. Here at the Style Coaching Institute® our training is based on the beliefs that:

  • Style is as much about inner confidence as it is about the clothes you wear
  • Looking good is about enhancing your appearance and embracing what makes you uniquely beautiful
  • No matter your size, shape or weight, if you feel beautiful on the inside then you can look beautiful on the outside
  • Making a good impression is a combination of the right clothes, grooming, body language and attitude
  • In essence, “looking good is only half the picture”

If these beliefs resonate with you and make sense, then a career in Personal Styling or Image Consultancy would not be fulfilling and rewarding on a long-term basis. Style Coaching™ will give you unlimited opportunities for personal and professional growth, fulfilment and rewards.

At our website, you might like to read some of the Success Stories and Testimonials from our Style Coaches™ around the world.

Our innovative and original stylist training courses have been studied in more countries than any other image training course in the world. We train and certify experienced and aspiring image consultants, personal stylists, personal shoppers, personal branding coaches, and life coaches to pursue the career of their dreams as professional Style Coaches™.

In just 10 years, Style Coaching™ has reached Andorra, Angola, Australia, Austria, Bahrain, Belgium, Canada, China, Columbia, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, France, Georgia, Germany, Ghana, Great Britain & Northern Ireland, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Isle of Man, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jersey, Kuwait, Lebanon, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, New Zealand, Nigeria, the Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Thailand, the Netherlands, Trinidad & Tobago, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, the USA, Vietnam and Qatar.

We offer online styling courses worldwide, and VIP tutored stylist training courses in London, Singapore and New Zealand. So, wherever you are in the world, we can help you to become a Style Coach™.

Cameron Russell admits she won “a genetic lottery”: she’s tall, pretty and an underwear model. But don’t judge her by her looks. In this fearless talk, she takes a wry look at the industry that had her looking highly seductive at barely 16 years old.

Cameron Russell has stomped the runways for Victoria’s Secret and Chanel, and has appeared in many fashion magazines. But she is much more than just a pretty face.

Why you should listen:
Cameron Russell has spent the last decade modeling. A Victoria’s Secret favorite, she has appeared in multiple international editions of Vogue as well as in ads for brands like Ralph Lauren and Benetton. But she feels at her core that image isn’t everything.

Cameron runs the blog ArtRoots.info, which is dedicated to covering grassroots public art and political power. She also experiments with creating street art herself. In addition, Cameron is the director of The Big Bad Lab, which creates participatory art that aims to include people in radical demonstrations of positive social change.
She’s a co-founder of the new web-based magazine Interrupt, about women, identity, the internet and taking action.

What we believe:
Like Cameron, we believe that beauty is about so much more than a pretty face. Here at the Style Coaching Institute®  we believe in the power of appearance, but unlike traditional image consultancy training courses, our courses also focus on helping men and women to cultivate self-esteem, confidence and a positive body image from the inside out.

If you have a passion for style, colour and fashion, then a career in personal styling  might something you’ve considered in the past. So, what’s held you back? Many of the individuals who choose to become certified Style Coaches™ think about becoming a personal stylist  or image consultant first… But, they usually have a feeling that ‘something’ is missing from the world of personal styling and image consultancy. They can’t quite define what “it” is, but they have the feeling that there is more to life than simply striving to “look good”. And they would be absolutely right.

When these same people find Style Coaching™ they instantly know that they’ve found the missing piece: a holistic approach that embraces the whole person, inside and out, and recognises that people are more than a reflection in the mirror.

What do you believe?
If you would like to help others to discover their inner and outer beauty then becoming a Certified Style Coach™ might be the vocation you have been waiting for. Our diploma courses offer you so much more than a personal stylist course, image consultancy course or personal shopping training. We include powerful life coach trainingpersonal branding,  self-image psychology, and all the other personal development tools you need to bring out the potential in every client.

We offer image training courses in LondonSingapore, and New Zealand, and our online courses are available worldwide. In fact, Style Coaching™ has reached over 63 countries including:

Andorra – Australia – Austria – Bahrain – Belgium – Canada – China – Croatia – Cyprus - Czech Republic – Denmark – Egypt – France – Georgia – Germany – Ghana - Great Britain & Northern Ireland - Guernsey – Hong Kong – Hungary – Indonesia – Ireland - Isle of Man – Israel – Italy – Japan – Jersey – Kuwait – Luxembourg – Malaysia – Malta – Mexico - New Zealand – Nigeria – Philippines – Poland – Portugal – Romania - Saudi Arabia – Singapore - South Africa – Spain – Sweden – Switzerland – Thailand - The Netherlands – Turkey – United Arab Emirates – USA – Vietnam – Qatar
