The warm-up act for summer is rapidly drawing to a close, and holidays abroad are back on, but are you ready to hit the beach running? Ok, perhaps running isn’t your thing, and you’re instead planning to glamorously stroll with a margarita in hand? Whatever your perfect summer looks like, if you’re anything like us, you’ll be determined to squeeze every last drop out of this year’s sunshine season. That’s why we’ve prepared some seasonal self-care habits that you can get started on now, so you don’t have to miss a minute of summer once it finally arrives.

Strip off the winter layers & prepare to be a sunshine goddess

When you’ve spent months layering on scarves, gloves, and winter coats, it’s easy to forget that deep beneath all those heavy knits there’s a sunshine goddess bursting to come out of hibernation and feel fresh air on her skin. So, when that first hot day arrives, don’t let it catch you by surprise! Be ready – which means preparing in advance (sorry, no ‘same-day’ delivery option available here).

If you haven’t already started, now would be a fantastic time to step away from the fleeces and give your skin a taste of the freedom to come. In the privacy of your own bathroom, strip down, check yourself out, and in the voice of Joey from Friends, ask yourself, “How you doin’?” Keep it fun and light-hearted! This isn’t about being self-critical or judgemental, it’s about checking in with your beautiful body, cultivating self-care habits, and looking forward to fun times ahead.

Has your body hair taken over in unwanted places?

When the sun’s out it’s time to enjoy your summer wardrobe capsule, which probably includes shorts, skirts and dresses. It’s up to you whether you shave your legs, but if smooth legs help you feel empowered to wear your favourite summer clothes, then it’s time to tame any wild body hair and establish a regular hair removal routine. Whatever your preferred method for hair removal, don’t neglect skin care steps like exfoliating first, and moisturising to finish. Smooth skin starts beneath the surface, so by nourishing your skin with proper pre- and post- hair removal care, you’ll notice a big difference.

Is your skin tone looking slightly subdued?

At the start of summer, let’s be honest, most people’s skin – particularly those with naturally fair skin tones – can appear a little dull and lacklustre. Now’s an ideal time to crack open that bottle of fake tan you’ve been saving for a special occasion. There are lots of self-tanning lotions, mousses, hydrating gels, serums, and mists to choose from, and the development of innovative new formulas means less risk of streakiness, orange shades and patchiness. The aim is to simply add a natural ‘sun-kissed glow’ to your current skin tone (not to drastically change your skin colour), and the secret to a flawless-looking tan is in the skincare prep. Shave at least 24 hours before you plan to tan and exfoliate your skin using an exfoliating glove or brush and a body scrub. This will give the tanning formula a smooth and clean base to work from, helping you to achieve the most natural-looking results. By adding a tiny hint of colour to your skin, you’ll look healthier, more radiant, and more polished when wearing your first summery outfits of the season.

Are your nails in tip-top condition?

There’s nothing nicer than letting the air get to your hands and feet after months of being bundled up in winter gloves, thick socks, and boots! But, you don’t want to be panicking about a pedicure on the same day you plan to premiere your gorgeous new open-toe sandals. That’s why now’s the time to schedule some pampering for yourself by booking in for a pedicure and manicure. Why not make an occasion of it by inviting a friend to join you? It’s not just about glamming up, it’s also about giving yourself some important time away from the madness of the world to relax, de-stress, and maybe catch up with a friend while you get summer-ready.

Is your hair crying out for a fresh new cut and colour?

Most women would agree that there’s nothing quite like a visit to the hair salon to reignite their enthusiasm for their personal style. In winter, a beautiful blow-dry is quickly nullified by wind and rain, and those blustery days can mean we tie our hair in ponytails or buns for practicality, or we cover it up with woollen hats (hello, frizz and flyaways!). In summer however, we can embrace sexy beach waves and voluminous bouncy curls, and a visit to the hair salon for a fresh cut and a revitalised hair colour can transform your top-to-toe image in just a couple of hours.
